El Club Cubano

I worked with friends on a project about our shared experiences of identity — living our lives balancing on the hyphen between Cuban-American. At the center of the project, El Club Cubano, was our very first ever visit to our “homeland” of Cuba. I shot and edited video interviews with my family, wrote blogs and produced a book of photographs from our visit. Before and after the trip we posted to the site I created using Wordpress, as well as social platforms I managed — Facebook (289 followers), Instagram (935 followers) and Twitter (467 followers).

Using tools such as Hootsuite I managed and grew a social media presence targeting users interested in Cuba, photography and issues related to identity. Sharing news stories, personal viewpoints and promoting our own content.

Prior to visiting Cuba for the first time I took a road trip from Southern California to Las Vegas — interviewing my family and friends, scanning old family photos, revisiting our histories. My friend Natalie shared with me stories about her grandfather and the hardships he endured during The Bataan Death march of World War II. And my mother shared childhood stories I'd never heard before. Like when her neighbor Teresita terrorized and taunted my aunt from the balcony of her home — until the day my 6-year-old mom picked up a rock and — with all her might — clocked Teresita right in the head. “She never messed with my sister again,” mom told me proudly, giggling.

Using Wordpress I created a hub for all the work our collaborative trio created — from personal essays to photo blogs and videos.
